Career: Reuters: graduate trainee, 1980; Brussels correspondent, 1981; Zurich correspondent, 1982; Financial Times: foreign desk in London, 1983; agriculture correspondent, 1984; commodities editor, 1985; Middle East editor, 1987; features editor, 1990; foreign editor, 1992; deputy editor, 1994; acting editor, 1997 (lasted 15 months while editor Richard Lambert in New York to launch new FT US edition; founding editor of a new German language business newspaper, Financial Times Deutschland, 1999 (joint venture between the Financial Times Group and Gruner & Jahr - leading Germany newspaper/magazine publisher) - FT Deutschland launched in February 2000; appointed editor in October 2001 - leaving in November 2005 because of strategy disagreements with FT's proprietor Pearson PLC; Commissioned by Gordon Brown, December 2005, to head Gowers Review of Intellectual Property an independent review of UK intellectual property rights - one important rational of which was to consider implications of extending the copyright on sound recordings in the UK; appointed head of corporate communications, advertising and brand & marketing strategy for Lehman Brothers in Europe, March 2006 - staying until the collapse of the company: joined BP as head of media relations in Autumn 2009
